Before going any further, I would suggest you read the extensive and thorough review by G.P. Padillo for the DVD release of this performance. He has gone into great detail and provides an excellent outline of the opera and its history. I am writing this review, due to some differences in perception of the work and its performance.

It has been stated, in other sources, that Puccini lacked the ability to handle the drama of a story such as Edgar. In fact, the fault lies with the libretto by Ferdinando Fontana, as the story of Edgar bears weaknesses and some degree of illogicality in its structure. In the total perspective of the complete four act work that has now been returned to us, Puccini has provided an opera with a relatively good dramatic arc, and an opera that contains a good complement of attractive arias, an especially beautiful duet, and a large quota of excellent and appealing chorus work.

As other reviews have stated, the performance does not commence well. I would not say it takes the entire first act for everyone to get into their stride, but it takes a good 20 minutes at the least, and this includes the strings, which is a body that could be better coordinated in these early stages. But it all settles down into quite excellent performances from all soloists (I suspect it was recorded at one performance, rather than the usual two or three, allowing editing together the best sections). In this fairly lengthy work, it is well worthwhile putting up with the shaky start for all that follows.

The work starts slowly, sounding to me initially as if it could be more in the vein of "Rondine" , but Puccini manages his flawed libretto and progressively builds the dramatic intensity and flow of the opera, reaching a powerful and moving conclusion to what proves to be a quite dramatic work. After the shaky beginnings, all of the artists, as mentiond, perform well, with José Cura outstanding in his lead role as Edgar. Special mention should also go to the chorus. This work is laden with quite a lot of chorus singing, and the chorus members are very well up to the demands of the work -- something important for this opera if it is going to "come off".

Whilst I might look forward to a production with slightly higher standards in most departments, all aspects here are sufficiently good to give a competent presentation of a work that we have been denied for far too long.

On the technical side, both lighting, photography and editing seemed to speak more of a film background rather than recording stage productions, but while giving a different look, this aspect did not spoil the production in any way for me. There are a few Blu--ray releases that have a marginally sharper image, but this is still in the very good class. Sound, which is also of a high standard, is available in PCM stereo, as well as DTS--HD Master Audio 7.1. Image is 16:9.

So, as I said, while we may wish for a production at a slightly higher standard, after much reflection, I gave five stars as the production shows a well-unified concept, providing a worthwhile performance of an opera none of us has ever seen, yet should never have been lost. Despite the faults, when the performance came to an end, my immediate reaction was that I wanted to watch it all over again straight away. If you love Puccini, then buy this, forgive it its weaknesses, considering its entirety rather than picking at odd places. I think if viewed and listened to in this way, that is, as the complete work, rather than the sum of its parts, you will be very pleased to have it added to your collection.

A couple of years ago WB Home Video put out the Ultimate Dirty Harry Collection and this appears to be a paired down version of that. Lacking a few of the extras -- the book, Biography special on Eastwood, Callahan's badge -- it is cheaper. If you don't already have these films, this is a pretty inexpensive way to do so. You do get the commentaries, special on the film Dirty Harry as well as the retrospective The Long Shadow of Dirty Harry -- "I like tough on criminals. I hunt them with a big gun so when I shoot them they fall down." John Milius' take on the character of Harry Callahan. The films: DIRTY HARRY ( classic )and four pretty entertaining sequels. A good edition to any library. Only Big Clint can fire that cannon with one hand, let alone the .44 Auto Mag. The pistol was the product of early 1970's technology. Built to withstand internal pressures greater than those generated by a bolt action rifle. It fired a custom round which was a .44 bullet shoved into a cut-down .308 Winchester cartridge to give extra gunpowder, making it a really hot load. Watch closely in Sudden Impact and when Clint is target shooting you will see flames coming out of the barrel and ejection port. In Magnum Force you get a group of killer cops and future stars: David Soul (Starsky & Hutch), Tim Matheson (Animal House) and Robert Urich (Vegas and Spencer for Hire). Look closely at the Dead Pool and a drugged out rock star, Jim Carrey. Go ahead, make your day.

Blu-ray and HD DVD (High Definition DVD) are two conflicting storage technologies for digital media like high definition movies, games and other audio visual material. There are a few other technologies emerging but it seems that these two rivals are the big players in the battle for home consumers hearts and minds. So what are they, which one is better and who is likely to win the latest technology format war.

Blu-ray was created by the Blu ray Disc Association, an association of major consumer electronics producers, like Sony and Panasonic, as a high capacity storage device to replace the standard DVD format. HD DVD was developed by the DVD forum, an alternative association of high tech electronics producers, including Toshiba and NEC, as their replacement of standard DVD.

Both work on the same principle. They use a blue laser with a shorter wavelength than the standard red laser of Dvd's and CD's (405 nm compared to 650 nm). This allows for more storage space on a disc. More storage is vital as high definition video becomes an industry standard in movies, TV and video games.

Latest information on the storage capacities of each format sees blu-ray out in front. A single layer blu-ray disc can store 25 GB compared to HD DVD of 15GB. A dual layer blu-ray can store 50 GB while the HD DVD stores 30 GB. This would suggest that blu-ray can store more detail and thus provide better extra features to movies etc. Although this is not completely true as video compression influences the amount of information stored on a disc, the capacity is a significant difference between the two formats.

Initial blu-ray discs stored data close to the surface of the disk. This meant that if the disc was scratched in any way it would probably malfunction or jam when playing. Apparently a protective layer has now been introduced to newer blu-ray disc that protects the data much more. HD DVD have always stored the data deeper in the disc and are resistant to most minor scratching and wear and tear.

Although the underlying technology is important in a format war, it is more often the case of the people supporting each format that has more influence on the outcome.

Again, it seems like blu-ray has the advantage.

Blu-ray is supported by consumer electronics companies Sony, Panasonic, Philips, Sharp and Pioneer and a number of others. This suggests that they will produce products that are exclusively devoted to using the blu-ray technology. The most recent instance of this is the Sony Playstation 3 that features a blu-ray disc player.

In terms of computer technology companies, blu-ray is supported by Apple, Dell, Sun Microsystems and Hewlett Packard. Their disk drives will use blu-ray.

Possibly more significant for people interested in home entertainment are the major movie companies supporting blu-ray. These are 20th Century Fox, Walt Disney and Warner Bros. Although Walt Disney and Warner Bros. are not supporting them exclusively and will produce movies in HD DVD format. At this point only Universal Pictures has an exclusive deal to produce HD DVD pictures.

On the HD DVD side possibly the biggest player is Microsoft. They have HD DVD readers in the X box games console and seem determined to throw their weight behind HD DVD.

Of the major consumer electronics companies, the most significant supporters of HD DVD are Toshiba, NEC and Kenwood.

In terms of computer component manufacturers, Intel is behind HD DVD.

Although it is still unclear who is winning the format war, it would seem that blu ray has some big supporters. Although HD DVD have some big names too, notably Microsoft. Prices of individual players and recording devices might also impact the success of each format. At this point most products are quite expensive but this will change with time.

Oh my gosh! I am 44 years old and loved it! Loved it! Loved it! It is fun to watch and I can't believe how many times I laughed out loud and woke my daughter in the next room. I can't believe that I am just seeing this movie. A bloody sequel to a 1980 slasher box-office hit classic that is well paced and exciting all the way. This is the one that has Jason Voorhees as the killer rather then his mother as the studio decided to have Jason as the killer when the first movie was a box-office smash in the summer of 1980. Betsy Palmer from the original movie does an appearence as Jason's mother but in a memory and Jason here doesn't don his famous hockey mask until the next movie but here he wears an Elephant-Man burlap sack over his disfigured face, the body count is much higher then last time with some fine gore like icepick to the skull and machete to the face. This one offers good timely scares, violent kills and made Jason the icon of horror in the 80's next to Freddy Krueger.

This blu-ray offers decent quality picture and surround sound with nice extras such as a Inside Crystal Lake Memories featurette, Lost Tales of Camp Blood part 2 short film, Jason Forever featurette, Friday's Legacy: Convention featurette and Trailer.

It isn't only silly gadgets, childish gimmickry and (more recently) CGI inanity that have deprived modern films of any semblance of realism, it is also what more recent films have done to the ancient, primordial art of hand-to-hand combat. If you examine Bond's fight in the train car, you will observe that the scene captures how people actually fight in real life. No high flying kicks, no silly poses, no Kung-fu ballet and gymnastics. No, this Bond fight wasn't any of those things. It was as real as I've seen on film. It's a shame that I had to go back nearly 50 years to see a "real" fight captured on film. And that fight scene has stayed with me and made an impression I won't soon forget mainly for its realism and superiority over what would follow in the decades to come.

I suppose much of the blame for the corruption of hand-to-hand combat scenes can be laid at the feet of Bruce Lee. And it pains me to say this, as I was an obsessive Bruce Lee fanatic growing up. But once Lee and his imitators started with the ballet, gymnastics and dancing, realistic looking fights were no longer choreographed in films. In the spy genre, I suppose the last Bourne film certainly went a long way toward capturing the rhythm and feel of real martial combat. But compared to FRWL, it too was stylized and too elegant to look real.

This is a great movie. Everything is well done. Even the effects remain effective and actually look better and more real than the CGI junk being done today.

I read the "I am legend" book. It was a piece of garbage. If you were disappointed because they did not follow the book, most American literatures need to be re-written. If they followed the book, it would have been a box-office disaster. These people need to make money. I found the "I am legend" book to be boring and past its time. There is a funeral plot and grave at there waiting for this book.

The film’s first half almost suggests that I Am Legend could be one of the finest movies of 2007. Director Francis Lawrence’s extraordinary, computer-generated images of a decaying New York City reveal weeds growing through the cracks of familiar streets that are also overrun by deer and prowled by lions. It’s impossible not to be fascinated by such a realistically altered cityscape, reverting to a natural environment, through which Smith moves with a weirdly enviable freedom, offset by his wariness over whatever is lurking in the dark of bank vaults and parking garages. Lawrence and screenwriters Mark Protosevich and Akiva Goldsman wisely build suspense by withholding images of the monsters until a peak scene of horror well into the story. It must be said, however, that the computer-enhanced creatures don’t look half as interesting as they might have had the filmmakers adhered more to Matheson’s vampire-nightmare vision. I Am Legend is ultimately noteworthy for Smith’s remarkable performance as a man so lonely he talks to mannequins in the shops he frequents. The film’s latter half goes too far in portraying Smith’s Neville as a pitiable man with a messianic mission, but this lapse into bathos does nothing to take away from the visual and dramatic accomplishments of its first hour. --Tom Keogh

Sweet baby Jesus, we thank you for blessing Will Ferrell and Adam McKay with the talent to create a NASCAR comedy as hilarious as Talladega Nights. The so-called "Ballad of Ricky Bobby" is hardly flawless in fact it's not always firing on all cylinders but with comedy star Ferrell and director McKay still hot from the success of their previous comedy hit Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, most of this 108-minute spoof of oval-track racing is so knee-slappin' funny that you can't help but surrender to the stupidity.

Obviously, Ferrell's the shining star, and his portrayal of lead-footed pit-crew-member-turned-#1 NASCAR champion Ricky "I Wanna Go Fast" Bobby (how can you not love that name?) is spot-on perfect, righteously spoofing the entirety of NASCAR culture without insulting its oft-ridiculed roots in redneck bootlegging of a bygone era. You could even argue that Talladega Nights is truer to NASCAR than Tom Cruise's Days of Thunder, and it's certainly more entertaining, especially when you add John C. Reilly as Ricky's life-long pal, teammate, and eventual rival Cal Naughton, Jr. (together they're nicknamed "Shake 'n Bake"), and Sacha Baron Cohen (from Da Ali G Show and Borat) as gay French "Formula Un" driver-turned NASCAR rival Jean Girrard, to a stellar cast including Molly Shannon, Greg Germann, Amy Adams and Michael Clarke Duncan.

Sure, it's mostly a showcase for Ferrell's loud, over-the-top antics and nonsensical non sequiturs (like cameo appearances by Elvis Costello and Mos Def), but with Ferrell behind the wheel, Talladega Nights rolls into victory lane with fuel to spare, and there's one final bit of comedy (with a tip of the hat to William Faulkner) for those who sit through the credits. --Jeff Shannon

So in your quest to conjure up information on digital cameras, relating to which one you should invest in, you keep coming upon the term SLR Digital Camera. This of course leaves you scratching your head a bit and wondering what the heck is that right? That's natural and you'll be glad to hear that it's a very common question.

You see... SLR digital cameras aren't as popular amid your everyday point and shoot photographer. You see tons and tons of compact and ultra compact digital cameras nearly every time you step outside. These days' people have a cell phone in one pocket and a digital camera in the other constantly just in case. Only since around 2005 have the SLR cameras become more popularly known, and less of what they used to be thought of, which is the type of digital camera that professionals use.

Basically that sentence probably cleared up the question in your mind as to what they are and where you've seen SLR cameras, but you still don't really know the difference between that camera with the longer lens and the normal compact cameras you commonly see.

First of all, the term SLR is an acronym that actually stands for Single Lens Reflex. For the most part, it's a camera that utilizes a viewfinder instead of the fancy LCD screens (although a lot of newer models of SLR's feature the LCD screen as well). These cameras have interchangeable lenses to give the photographer a much larger variety of shot choices and lens strengths.

With an SLR digital camera you frame the shot within your viewfinder and what you see is basically the exact shot that you're going to get. Therefore if your shot is blurry it's up to you to adjust that or else you're going to be getting a blurry shot. For the most part, the SLR cameras are less automatic and more manual - hence the fact that until recently only very avid photographers and professionals used them.

In essence this manual control makes for a much more versatile digital camera, giving the knowledgeable photographer much more control to create the photos that he or she wants or needs, and relies less...or not at all... on any of the cameras automatic functions whatsoever.

The price of an SLR digital camera is typically much higher than the compact digitals, and usually cost in the $1000 to $3,000 price range, and that's not ordinarily including important accessories like extra lenses, tripods, etc. However, since the SLR digital cameras are growing so quickly in popularity, as with anything, the prices are beginning to adjust and decrease. The parallel to this is to simply think back to when a DVD player was $500 dollars compared to the fact that you can buy one now for a quick $50 bucks.

Now most importantly to the avid digital camera enthusiast or professional photographer is obviously the quality of the shot itself. The SLR cameras are of significant superior quality in nearly all cases... and can pack a punch of up to between 12 and 18 megapixels. However there are some insane SLR digital cameras that have amazing megapixel counts in the hundreds. This is obviously overkill for any sort of ordinary photography and honestly the highest megapixel cameras in the 500 megapixel range are for space photography and other special functions like that.

But the quality of the SLR camera is usually superior to the regular old compact digital cameras, and that's largely due to the large image sensors that they come equipped with.

So now that you know the answer to the question "what is an SLR digital camera" you can go out and decide if it's the right type of digital camera for you. Frankly, if you're serious about learning photography as an enthusiast then the SLR might be the camera for you.

The Samsung BD-P1500 1080p Blu-ray - My only complaint

I've had my Samsung BD-P1500 1080p Blu-ray for 2 weeks. You never had a Blu-Ray before. It looks good in my cabinet, is quieter than my roommate Blu-Ray and of course it has amazing picture and sound. The USB port and Ethernet port to work, but I have no firmware or code updates Still Down.

The only real operational noise you hear is a clue to search, you can listen from the couch, when quietly. Not a biglot to me. I have the occasional flicker in the center of the screen in some parts of the notes usually black screens (such as credits). Whenever there is in the same frame, but it is a problem with the discs rather than the player might be.

An important advantage of the Samsung BD-P1500 1080p Blu-ray has more of my roommate is that the disk load much faster. It also helps make a progress bar during load times, which seem less bothersome. In any case, you knowsomething happens.

Of course, the Samsung BD-P1500 1080p Blu-ray are not perfect. It is not top-of-the-line, so what do you expect? On the one hand, outputs only in the back of the RCA outputs - no coaxial, without headphones, none of the older types of wiring - So I have to get a new TV (like you do not completely lose the appearance of HD Blu-Ray, as it is located in an older TV anyway). More importantly, no Dolby 5.1 audioCheck.

One of the upshots of this is that you can not escape its pre-amplifier receivers to play the latest audio formats and let the Blu-ray decryption. The receiver decodes Dolby age have only 5.1 (no DTS). This player can send the pulse-modulated current in the signal receiver for 5.1 Dolby, but my receiver which only saw a 2-channel (not "speak"), Pulse Code Modulation. At least the players can lower sample rates, so that elderly recipients still receivingSound, although not as clean as it could be a modern receiver.

Just out and pay for a new receiver to take advantage of the sound quality that the Samsung BD-P1500 1080p Blu-ray offers. Maybe I'm a little obsessive, but it just did not feel right to have a new look impressive and do not need the perfect sound to go with it.

So my conclusion is that for people with new television sets and new - the Blu-rayis first rate. If you have an older receiver, ironically, would be the best savings possible, a little more for a player with Dolby 5.1 analog outputs are charged and reuse your existing receiver.

i had never been interested in look for or purchasing rock/metal bandsuntil a few months ago i got dream theatre "live in budokan " and was blown away by it, what a fabulous and very talented group of musicians, spellbinding! then i saw Nightwish "end of an era and decided to purchase it, best thing i did in 2009, how great they are and never seem to run out of puff. its made me aware that there are probably quite a few more bands like them out there to find, i have yes & deep purple among my music choices but nightwish just blows them away trailng in there dust, see even an old guy can get into metal bands and i'll look for more, i'm waiting and hoping amazon can get me kamelot "one cold winters night" i feel that it might be as goo , there sure is some great music in this world, one is always searching for it

I was a big fan of Deep Purple back in the early 80's. My favorite configuration was Mark II, which I am sure is a lot of people's favorite as well. Since their reunion, I bought a couple of their newer CDs, but never really got into the newer sound too much. I think it sounds too "commercial". In other words, they have sold out. Then I didn't listen to them for a while. I didn't even know that they had picked up a new guitarist -- Steve Morse. This Blu-ray is a bit of a surprise. First, the image and sound quality of Blu-ray is superb. Steve Morse is the biggest surprise. He is great. I like him a lot, more so than Ritchie Blackmore. He gives Deep Purple an updated sound. They now sound more like a modern heavy metal band, even though many of the songs are still classics. It is quite refreshing. Don Airey is not John Lord, but he is every bit as virtuoso. Unfortunately, I do have to agree with the last couple of reviewers -- Ian Gillan's voice is lacking. At 63, he should be thinking of retirement. Then again, without Ian Gillan, Deep Purple will not be Deep Purple. May be they will be lucky (like Queen and Paul Rodgers) in finding a singer that can replace Ian Gillan. Overall, I enjoy this Blu-ray, and would recommend it to any Deep Purple fans.

The choreography by Krill Simonov is new and different to that seen in most productions and this gives a freshness to the production. Quite a few dances are traditionally performed by solo artists but here are danced by two or three together. Many of the presentations have new, elaborate and effective staging with great effects. The music is very familiar to me and the overall result in 24 bit surround sound is both entertaining and musically satisfying. A 12 year old ballet student and her family looked at it with us and everyone voted it "great". Thoroughly recommended.

A really fun and a times moving tale. It Combines elements of fantasy, horror, and science fiction in a basic good vs evil story. John Constantine (Keanu Reeves) is a somewhat fallen hero and de facto leader of a group of misfit sidekicks fighting the forces of darkness (literally the devil and his minions) under the rules of 'The Balance' which in detente/cold-war fashion limit what either side is allowed to do. It is a refreshingly unusual and entertaining film that might be classified as a quirky modern day spin on greek mythology, at once epic and very personal. I rented it a few weeks ago and really enjoyed it so I am adding it to my permanent collection today. The theology in the movie is typical hollywood kooky so if your the sort who gets your boxers in a knot over that kind of thing you might want to pass on it -- otherwise I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys science fiction and modern fantasy.

I didn't have these yet, and they were on my Blu-ray shopping list. So, when the bundle came up, I jumped on it. I was not disappointed with the picture quality or the punched up surround sound. Donnie Darko is one of those things you just have to watch over and over to find all the twists, and you keep finding more. Boondock Saints is incredible, another sleeper that gets away from the mainstream. Edward Scissorhands is an interesting and entertaining flick - Alan Arkin is at his best with his dryness, and Depp and Ryder do not disappoint either. The parallels to Frankenstein are not easily missed.

Monster House begins with some deliciously creepy scenes that will send chills down children's spines (and may be too intense for younger viewers); animated movies rarely make such effective use of what isn't being shown. The animation is vivid and detailed (though CGI still has a ways to go in capturing the full range of human facial expressions). But like most horror movies, the anticipation of horror is much more exciting than the horror itself; as the secrets of Monster House are revealed, the movie's thrills unravel. The noisy explosions at the end aren't half as much fun as the slow twitches of a few blades of grass in the movie's elegant beginning. --Bret Fetzer

Tim Burton fostered in a new era of superhero films with his impressively dark, original Batman films BATMAN and BATMAN RETURNS. Then Joel Schumacher trashed all that with his horrific, comical and empty flicks BATMAN FOREVER and BATMAN AND ROBIN.

Thankfully (and there's an hitch!), Christopher Nolan's 2005 rendering BATMAN BEGINS is a fine return to form for the popular dark superhero. Nolan based BB in "reality" and focuses on young Bruce Wayne (excellent work by Christian Bale), who witnessed the murder of his parents as a child, who travels the world trying to understand the criminal mind and ends up undertaking ninja training in the Far East under the tutelage of Henri Ducard (a slyly malevolent Liam Neeson) and Ras Al Ghul.

Upon his return to Gotham after years of exile, Wayne resumes his place as the head of Wayne Manor, which was taken care of in his absence by family major domo Alfred (fine performance by the esteemed Michael Caine) and Wayne Industries, run by Mr. Earle (wonderfully played by veteran screen bad guy Rutger Hauer). Wayne also meets Lucius Fox (reliably played by the great Morgan Freeman), the head of the Development section of Wayne Industries, and enlists his help in obtaining high-tech equipment so that he can begin leading his double life as both Wayne and Batman. Last, but not least, Bruce re-acquaints himself with his childhood friend and now assistant DA Rachel Dawes (played surprisingly well by Katie Holmes).

So the adventure begins! Batman prowls the streets of Gotham at night taking out scuzzy lowlifes at first (he saves Rachel from some goons on the subway) and making his initial mark. He also thwarts the city's top criminal Carmine Falcone (solidly played by Tom Wilkinson), who ironically is the man who ordered the kill of the man who killed Bruce's parents. Batman also meets Police Sgt. Jim Gordon (superb work by Gary Oldman), who initially skeptical, ends up being the conduit between Batman and the police force. Batman runs into a higher class of criminal in Dr. Crane/Scarecrow (creepily played by Cillian Murphy), who shoots a toxic concoction from his mask to literally psych out his victims. At the climax, Batman must save Gotham from his former mentor Ducard, who it turns out was the head ninja Al Ghul all along!

BATMAN BEGINS is perhaps the first Batman film to focus primarily on the hero himself and not the villains. A highly involving character study of one man's despair, disillusionment, acceptance, strength, and resolve, Nolan manages to elevate BB above the genre. I've not seen all his work, but I've got to believe this is perhaps one of the best (if not the best!) performance of Christian Bale's career. Additionally, Nolan does a good job of CGI-ing effects to make a real city an authentic stand-in for Gotham (unlike an unmentioned sequel that didn't even try! Told you there was a hitch!). A superhero film where the protagonist is the star? Novel idea!

Batman Begins discards the previous four films in the series and recasts the Caped Crusader as a fearsome avenging angel. That's good news, because the series, which had gotten off to a rousing start under Tim Burton, had gradually dissolved into self-parody by 1997's Batman & Robin. As the title implies, Batman Begins tells the story anew, when Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) flees Western civilization following the murder of his parents. He is taken in by a mysterious instructor named Ducard (Liam Neeson in another mentor role) and urged to become a ninja in the League of Shadows, but he instead returns to his native Gotham City resolved to end the mob rule that is strangling it. But are there forces even more sinister at hand?

Co-written by the team of David S. Goyer (a veteran comic book writer) and director Christopher Nolan (Memento), Batman Begins is a welcome return to the grim and gritty version of the Dark Knight, owing a great debt to the graphic novels that preceded it. It doesn't have the razzle dazzle, or the mass appeal, of Spider-Man 2 (though the Batmobile is cool), and retelling the origin means it starts slowly, like most "first" superhero movies. But it's certainly the best Bat-film since Burton's original, and one of the best superhero movies of its time. Bale cuts a good figure as Batman, intense and dangerous but with some of the lightheartedness Michael Keaton brought to the character. Michael Caine provides much of the film's humor as the family butler, Alfred, and as the love interest, Katie Holmes (Dawson's Creek) is surprisingly believable in her first adult role. Also featuring Gary Oldman as the young police officer Jim Gordon, Morgan Freeman as a Q-like gadgets expert, and Cillian Murphy as the vile Jonathan Crane. --David Horiuchi

I wasn't sure what to think going into 'Hairspray' - all I knew was that it had been hugely critically acclaimed back when it first came out, but that doesn't always mean a movie will be any good. Let me just say, though, that in this case all those fawning critics were absolutely correct.

Where do you start when recommending 'Hairspray'? The singing, to start with, is absolutely divine, and the lyrics of the songs are so fun and wild it's impossible not to laugh. The acting, too, is wonderful - Pffeifer is delightful in her role as the petty, aging prom queen; Latifa is spectacular, as always; Walken plays the same persona that he always plays so well; and while I was initially put off by Travolta's performance, he finally won me over and I had to admit that at the end of the movie, his character is probably one of my favorites - it's one thing to portray a character who is coming into her own as a young woman, but it's another thing entirely to pull off a character who is trying to recapture the spirit and joi de vivre of youth, and he does it well.

I was surprised to see that so much of the plot of 'Hairspray' revolved not around accepting a young woman despite her heavy size (what I had assumed the movie would be about) and instead focusing on race relations and acceptance in society in general. Indeed, at the end of the movie, we have two of the most-rare-couples-in-movies: an interracial couple (where the girl is taller than the boy, no less!) and a heavy-girl/heartthrob-boy couple. This universal message prevents the movie from being just another teen movie about loving yourself and not listening to society's demands for perfection, and instead turns it into something timeless and classic. Even better, I was pleased to see that the main character never really judges her body image negatively - she is what she is, and it doesn't really bother her. That's incredibly unusual for a movie - the usual subtext underneath all the 'acceptance' platitudes is that, ideally, you would work to get that perfect body anyway, and just 'accept' yourself in the meantime. Tracy, however, doesn't 'accept' her flaws - she actively loves herself and acknowledges that she is lovely and talented.

Although I'm sure that the musical from which this movie was adapted was probably even better (live performances very often are), I definitely recommend 'Hairspary' as one of the best movies I've seen. I went into it dreading a sludgy "love yourself" teen movie and instead found a movie that was incredibly funny, edgy, and unforgettable.

It's rare that a movie captures the intensity and excitement of a live Broadway musical production while appealing to a broader movie-going audience, but the 2007 Hairspray is an energetic, powerfully moving film that does just that. A remake of the 1988 musical film Hairspray, the new Hairspray is a film adaptation of the 2002 Broadway musical and features more likeable characters than the original film and an incredible energy that stems from a great cast, fabulous new music, and the influence of musical producer Craig Zadan. What remains constant throughout all three versions of Hairspray is the story's thought-provoking exploration of prejudice and racism. Set in Baltimore in 1962, the film opens with chubby girl Tracy Turnblad (Nikki Blonsky) singing her heart out in a rendition of "Good Morning Baltimore" that, while admittedly a bit too long, sets the farcical tone for the film. Viewers quickly become immersed in Tracy's teenage world of popular television dance shows, big hair, the stigma of being different, and the first hesitant steps toward racial integration within a segregated world. The Corny Collins (James Marsden) television dance show is a teenage obsession in Tracy's world and Link Larkin (Zac Efron) is every girl's dream partner, so when a call for auditions goes out, Tracy skips school to try out, but is rejected by station manager Velma von Tussle (Michelle Pfeiffer) because of her large size and the threat of competition for Velma's own daughter Amber (Brittany Snow). Perseverance and the support of her friend Penny (Amanda Bynes), father Wilbur (Christopher Walken), and negro dancer Seaweed (Elijah Kelley) lead Tracy to the spotlight and the chance of a lifetime, but more and more Tracy discovers that fairness and equality for those who are different does not come without a fight and that sacrifices must be made to effect change. While the message is serious, Hairspray is first and foremost a comedy with stellar performances by John Travolta as Edna Turnblad (who ever imagined Saturday Night Fever's iconic star would appear onscreen as a woman?), Christopher Walken, and Michelle Pfeiffer. Part of what makes Hairspray so powerful is the exceptional music composed by Marc Shaiman, including songs newly composed for the movie like "Ladies' Choice," "The New Girl in Town," and "Come So Far," and the awesome vocal talents of Queen Latifah (Motormouth Maybelle) and a cast of heretofore musically-unknown actors like Nikki Blonsky, Zac Efron, and Brittany Snow who really can sing. Notable trivia includes Jerry Stiller's appearance in both versions of the film (as Wilbur in the 1988 film and as Mr. Pinky in this 2007 rendition), and a cameo appearance by 1988 director and screenplay writer John Waters. The writing and directing team of Harry Elfont and Deborah Kaplan (Josie and the Pussycats) met at film school and discovered that their respective parents were friends and they had both gone to High School at the same time in Philadelphia, just a few miles apart from each other. When Harry met Deborah would make a great movie, but maybe it already has, it was just called "Can't Hardly Wait." If they had just gone to the same High School, instead of two nearby ones, they could have been Amanda Beckett and Preston Meyers (I'm betting this is from Harry's perspective) or Kenny Fisher and Denise Fleming (Deborah's, anyone?).

Preston Meyers (Ethan Embry) fell in love with Amanda Beckett (Jennifer Love Hewitt) the first moment he saw her. It was fate that threw them together, because they were both eating strawberry Pop-Tarts. Who can deny that the strawberry Pop-Tarts were an omen?

Preston: [narrating] It was October, freshman year. First time in history that I'd ever missed the bus. If I had arrived on time, I never would've seen her. But as it was, I was the first person at Huntington Hills High to set eyes on Amanda Beckett. It was her first day at school. Then, I'm sitting in class enjoying a late breakfast when out of all the classrooms in the entire school, she walks into mine. And where does the teacher sit her? Right next to me! Now, up until now, one could write this off to coincidence. But then she reaches in her bag and pulls out a strawberry Pop-Tart - the very same breakfast pastry I was consuming at that moment! What was I to do? How was I to proceed?

How was he to proceed, indeed? Preston's head was in the clouds; but by the time he cleared his thoughts Amanda had already been snatched up by Mike (Peter Facinelli), a shallow and conceited jock. Nevertheless, Preston believes in the portentous strawberry Pop-Tarts, and pours his feelings into a letter to Amanda that he constantly revises. As further evidence that he and Amanda are meant to be together he hears "Mandy" by Barry Manilow on the radio just as he is going to the graduation party. A party where Amanda will be in attendance, having just broken up with Mike. Mandy, short for Amanda -- could anything be more fortuitous?

Preston asks his friend, Denise Fleming, what she thinks of the signs, fate, and the latest revision of his letter to Amanda. Denise is skeptical. She is the clever red headed outsider, rolling her eyes at the High School hijinks, while secretly wishing that she could be popular. Maybe she'd like to be more than friends with Preston, too, but all he thinks about is Amanda, 24/7. "What am I, chopped liver?" Denise probably asks herself.

Meanwhile, Kenny Fisher thinks he is tres cool, but while he emulates the speech and fashion of Afro Americans, on him it just looks comical. It didn't work for Joseph Gordon-Levitt in "Havoc," either.

So now you get the gist of "Can't Hardly Wait." It is about a big party right after High School graduation, where Freaks, Geeks, Jocks, and Frocks all frolic, some with hidden agendas, and some with agendas not hidden at all, completely and totally blatant. If you were persecuted in High School, perhaps you can relate. The script very much favors the clever misfits, and forecasts the day when the smart will finally prevail. Hard to believe that will ever happen to geeks like this, but it makes for a nice wishful fantasy.

"Can't Hardly Wait" is very well written, and juggles the multiple story balls well. The direction was none too shabby, either. With Harry and Deborah, you get two points of view for the price of one. There are many Rashomon moments. Raging High School kegger that careens out of control? Tres cliche. But "Can't Hardly Wait" rises above the triteness of the material. There are tons of actors and actresses here who will go on to greater fame, and others who are headed for oblivion -- or television. It is fun just to watch the falling or shooting stars.

Jennifer Love Hewitt is really cute. Wow. She's acutely cute. Excrutiatingly cute also were Nicole Bilderback and Tamala Jones. Lauren Ambrose gave a very nuanced performance as Denise Fleming. Seth Green took many chances as Kenny Fisher, but I'm not sure that the chances he took paid off. He should get points for enthusiasm. Lose the goggles, though.

This underrated teen comedy from 1998 is guilty of being a proud underachiever, and it doesn't bring anything new to the genre, but look closely and you'll find the makings of a much better movie buried under all the keg-party antics. The basic story is typical for this kind of comedy. A young, aspiring writer named Preston (Ethan Embry) has been lusting after class beauty Amanda (Jennifer Love Hewitt, from TV's Party of Five) for four years of high school, but he's never had the nerve to tell her. Now that they're about to graduate he's finally worked up the courage to write her a soul-baring love letter. At the raucous graduation keg party that takes up most of the movie's 98 minutes, Preston agonizes while Amanda's selfish jock ex-boyfriend tries to win her back, and delivering his love letter turns out to be more difficult than he ever imagined. What's interesting about Can't Hardly Wait has little to do with its attractive leads, however. The most engagingly real and entertaining characters are the misfits who show up in the subplots, including a geek (Charlie Korsmo) who turns into the life of the party, and a pair of old friends (Seth Green, Lauren Ambrose) who confront each other about their mutual needs and insecurities. There are some really good scenes between these two, and this modest movie has a few other pleasant surprises up its sleeve. The movie is truly a classic that more people have seen than any other feature film in the entire history of modern cinema. I give the movie itself 5 stars. So this review is strictly for the new 3-disc WOZ blu-ray set.

I purchased this as soon as it came out because I'm a huge WOZ fan and I heard so many great things about it. It is nice, however I was somewhat let down as the release isn't much different from the '05 3-disc DVD set.

It includes 3 discs (2 with silk screen pictures):
1 blu-ray disc is the movie w/ special features (most of which were on the '05 DVD boxed set)
1 blu-ray disc includes the John Ritter movie and various OZ movies before the '39 classic
1 DVD (not blu-ray) includes the 6-hour documentary "When the Lion Roars" (this is a double-sided DVD)

The packaging and the inside pictures of the discs were somewhat of a let down. They were not as colorful and vibrant as the '05 set. By the way, check out the pictures that I took with my digital camera and posted.

The movie looked amazing and sounded beautifully, I can just imagine what Warner Bros. has in store for the 75th anniversary (something in 3-D?). I recommend the 3-disc blu-ray to anyone who collects WOZ memorabilia and movies as it will be a collector's item (just like the 4-disc boxed set which comes with lots of great stuff). However, if you're just looking for the movie, you may want to get simply the 1-disc blu-ray (if you can find it) or the 4-disc deluxe boxed set as this is less (online) than the 3-disc Emerald Edition.

Remember, only bad witches are ugly.

GetGray is a hobbyist produced home theater calibration DVD. You can only buy it through internet download, as it’s a VIDEO_TS folder you burn to a DVD-R. As implied by the title, the DVD’s primary purpose is to track your digital display device’s underlying gray scale with the aid of a color measuring device like the Colorvision Spyder2 or Gretag Macbeth Eye One Pro.

GetGray has some caveats. First, it can only be used (by itself, without the aid of additional calibration discs like Avia Guide to Home Theater and Digital Video Essentials) with digital displays like LCD, DLP, LCOS, etc. It does not have the proper test screens to evaluate CRT displays (tube TVs and old and/or high-end front projectors) like needle pulse and blooming patterns. Second, since The DVD is an internet download it cannot include any color filters for primary color evaluation. The disc’s author assumes you already own a calibration disc with the included filters and even offers a photography supply to buy your own filter. Last week we rented curb your enthusiasm and it has massive distracting jaggies in all the backgrounds, I believe a short coming of the source video resolution.) (Despite this aversion to these 3:2-2:2-bad-edit-low-frame-rate-anime-euro-PAL revealing test DVDs, I check the “Special Interest” shelf every time I’m in a video store for the HQV Benchmark DVD.) Oh and no audio evaluations except for a Tron Master Control-like face for lip-synch control.

GetGray’s main drive is to create a disc that is easy to navigate when compared to both Avia and DVE (Avia’s navigation is adequate but its gray patterns have slight color casts; DVE navigation is terrible: it makes you use the Title button on your DVD remote, torture). Get Gray has two levels of menus: big categories (Brightness and Contrast, Grayscale) and their logical test pattern groups (5% Gray Ramp, 20/80% Gray Windows). Highlight the menu item to drop into the test pattern loop, press Next Chapter and Last Chapter Skip to move within the loop and hit menu to drop back to the main navigation. Simple.

This simplicity allowed me to calibrate my Sanyo PLV-Z3 over and over again until 2:30 in the morning Sunday night (I can’t get rid of a green/yellow cast in the 90% and 100% gray windows, I’ll be back at it again tonight, I know the correct setting combo for flat grayscale and high contrast is hidden in the projector) with very few button presses on my universal remote. I found the following test signals super useful and convenient:

* 5% Gray Ramp: This test pattern is great for setting your contrast and brightness, just adjust each until the third to last bar from each end blends into the last two bars. This chart will also give you a good idea of what your display device’s grayscale controls (like RGB GAin and Offset in the Sanyo Z3) alter.

* 20/80% Gray Windows: Use these high-low gray window loops to quickly adjust the grayscale controls. You’ll be flipping between the two often tweaking the grayscale to perfection.

* 10% Gray Windows: After getting your RGB grayscale in the ballpark with the 20/80 windows, sample each 10% increment—from 0–100%—and enter them into AVS Forum member Radar’s Colorimeter spread sheet to track your D65 gray target across your 2.2 target gamma.

GetGray includes brief instructions covering each of the included signals plus some advice on calibrating and additional sources for blue filters and supplemental test discs.

I purchased this video expecting stunning views from space, and I got that. But it was not "one hour" as advertized, rather it was a 3:45 launch sequence followed by 14:53 of original footage from space, followed by three repeats of about 14:30 each from the space view footage. Despite the claim in another user review, this repetition has nothing to do with consecutive orbits, it is merely re-use of the same footage. Even the most casual observer can notice the repetition of such distinctive scenes as a zoom-in on Mt Fuji, or the dumping of the urine holding tank. I would have given this disc a five-star rating if it had the promised hour of original video. As it is, the crystal-clear views from space and the 8 hours of great 5.1 surround music warrant a four-star rating. As a relatively new Amazon customer, I have found by experience that it pays to check out the customer reviews, as they will tell you things the promotional information will not.

In recent years Yuri Grigorovich's 1968 "Spartacus" had become something of a problem child in the Bolshoi Ballet's repertory. Ever since Irek Mukhamedov stopped dancing the title role, they had a hard time finding somebody to tackle it in a satisfactory way. With guest star Carlos Acosta they finally did.

Cuban-born Carlos Acosta learned the role in 2007 with legendary Spartacus interpreter Mikhail Lavrovsky and danced it to great success in Moscow before he conquered the London Coliseum as well as the Palais Garnier in Paris (where this film was shot) with it. By the dynamism of his dancing Acosta gives the ballet its vitality back, by the sincerity of his acting he invests the character with a meaning again, and by his technical brilliance he upgrades Grigorovich's choreography. It's been some time since we saw a Spartacus so full of anger and hatred, putting his whole being into his leap for freedom. Although differently, Acosta gives sense to the choreography just as much as it first interpreters did. "Spartacus" has long since ceased to be the Soviet propaganda piece it once could be taken for and although its interpreters continue to move on this same outsized, superhuman scale, an artist like Acosta remains above all a very human Spartacus with whom we, today, anywhere in the world, can completely associate with. As a performance it is utterly exciting as well as profoundly moving, and it's great to have it preserved on video.

"Spartacus" isn't completely saved, though, because Alexander Volchkov's Crassus remains far too meek and gentle to portray the unbalanced Roman despot who mercilessly crushes the rebels. On the other hand, the female leads of Phrygia and Aegina are still in safe hands with the current crop of Bolshoi ballerinas. The petite Nina Kaptsova is an excellent Phrygia, fragile and expressive, while Maria Allash is in her element as Aegina. The Bolshoi company performs for the rest with plenty of energy and conviction.

Filmed live in Paris at the Palais Garnier in January 2008, it's a shame that the Bolshoi's own orchestra wasn't used for this release. Pavel Klinichev conducts the Orchestra Colonne, which lacks conviction and energy and cannot hide its unfamiliarity with Khatchaturian's score.

Directed by Ross MacGibbon and shot by the French Bel Air Media team, close-ups are sparingly used and aren't too distracting. Bonus features include clips of studio rehearsals and interviews with Acosta, his co-stars Kaptsova, Allash and Volchkov, choreographer Yuri Grigorovich, Bolshoi Ballet artistic director Alexei Ratmansky, and the Paris Opera Ballet's Brigitte Lefèvre. Acosta talks about his beginnings in Havana and his personal affinity with the role of the Thracian rebel.

All in all a fine new release. Collectors owning previous versions of the ballet with Vladimir Vasiliev and Irek Mukhamedov, can safely invest in it, as Acosta is a completely different Spartacus and on his own well worth the admission price.

i completely and inequivocally agree with z hayes (plano,texas) on every aspect that she touched on. Book 6 in the Harry Potter series was my absolute favorite and the movie just did not do it justice. it was a decent movie if you've seen all the movies but never read the books however, if you've read the books it would be hard, if not impossible, to give this movie 5 stars. really, im stretching it to give it four. the added scenes add nothing to the movie and most of the scenes from the book that werent in the movie were vitally important to the plot and progression of the characters and story. im not going to give anything away, i just need to say that the movie was a disappointment. the characters are amazing in that the actors portraying them portray them perfectly and with the necessary depth. my only hope for the final 2 movies is that the directly sticks to the book and doesn't go on about adding more unnecessary and meaningless scenes. given that the final book is in two installments there is no reason not to lay it all out there and just really go for it. more action, more depth, more special effects, more everything. for those of us that have been following the series through 7 books and 6 movies i think it is vitally important to give us what we've been waiting for. if i may say so, we arent looking for the directors interpretation of what the book should have been, we are looking for exactly what the book was laid out on screen in all its glory from start to finish. for me, the whole point of the movie adaptations lays in the success of this last one and by success i mean accuracy, depth, and wow factor. i want to leave the theater feeling like it was all worth it and in this one i really just didn't and that's not even including the disappointment and irritation that stemmed from the fact that my favorite book was a let down on screen.

The sixth installment of the Harry Potter series begins right where The Order of the Phoenix left off. The wizarding world is rocked by the news that "He Who Must Not Be Named" has truly returned, and the audience finally knows that Harry is "the Chosen One"--the only wizard who can defeat Lord Voldemort in the end. Dark forces loom around every corner, and now regularly attempt to penetrate the protected walls of Hogwarts School. This is no longer the fun and fascinating world of magic from the first few booksâit's dark, dangerous, and scary.

Harry (Daniel Radcliffe) suspects Draco Malfoy (Tom Felton) to be a new Death Eater recruit on a special mission for the Dark Lord. In the meantime, Professor Dumbledore (Michael Gambon) seems to have finally removed the shroud of secrecy from Harry about the dark path that lies ahead, and instead provides private lessons to get him prepared. It's in these intriguing scenes that the dark past of Tom Riddle (a.k.a. Voldemort) is finally revealed. The actors cast as the different young versions of Riddle (Hero Fiennes-Tiffin and Frank Dillane) do an eerily fantastic job of portraying the villain as a child. While the previous movies' many new characters could be slightly overwhelming, only one new key character is introduced this time: Professor Horace Slughorn (with a spot-on performance by Jim Broadbent). Within his mind he holds a key secret in the battle to defeat the Dark Lord, and Harry is tasked by Dumbledore to uncover a memory about Voldemort's darkest weapon--the Horcrux. Despite the long list of distractions, Harry, Ron (Rupert Grint), and Hermione (Emma Watson) still try to focus on being teenagers, and audiences will enjoy the budding awkward romances. All of the actors have developed nicely, giving their most convincing performances to date.

More dramatic and significant things go down in this movie than any of its predecessors, and the stakes are higher than ever. The creators have been tasked with a practically impossible challenge, as fans of the beloved J.K. Rowling book series desperately want the movies to capture the magic of the books as closely as possible. Alas, the point at which one accepts that these two mediums are very different is the point at which one can truly enjoy these brilliant adaptations. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is no exception: it may be the best film yet. For those who have not read the book, nail-biting entertainment is guaranteed. For those who have, the movie does it justice. The key dramatic scenes, including the cave and the shocking twist in the final chapter, are executed very well. It does a perfect job of setting up the two-part grand finale that is to follow. --Jordan Thompson

The disc also includes Warner Bros.
